The simulator consists of a harbour crane on a base with a moveable platform alongside. The platform can exactly simulate the movements of a ship tossing about in the sea. Both the movements of the platform and the lifting tables of the crane change according to the wind speed and wind directions chosen by the instructor.
Approved, patented and accredited
The complete training facility has been patented and the simulator has been granted CE approval. The branch organisation NOGEPA was closely involved with the development and the NOGEPA training coordinator has now officially accredited the simulator.
Oil companies have been able to make use of the training facilities since 11 February, 2009. The basic course takes just one week so that hardly any waiting time is necessary.
Not dependent on the weather
Crane drivers for oil platforms have been traditionally trained at sea. Loading and unloading ships requires special skills, because both the ship’s deck and the load are continually moving due to the waves and the force of the wind. Drivers have to learn how to keep the load under control in these conditions. By using the simulator VTC is not dependent on weather conditions or the availability of ships, materials and people. The examination is also carried out using the simulator.
